| Heins Riverside Farms operated by James Heins and Elizabeth (Betsy) Van der Hagen
Located: 14094 - 534th Lane, Vernon Center, MN 56090

Jim and Betsy have worked extensively with the Blue Earth County Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and Zone 10 Joint Powers Organization (JPO) staff to install erosion control practices on land they own and operate. They have promoted and installed many CRP waterways over their years in farming. Recently installing five water and sediment control basins at the edge of ravines to control soil erosion occurring on the farm through EQIP and CWP. Including, two extremely large grade stabilization structures with assistance from EQIP and technical support from Zone 10 JPO engineering staff. In the fall of 2007 two more grade stabilization structures will be built on their property through EQIP and State Cost-Share Programs. One additional water and sediment control basin will be installed through EQIP and the Maple River CWP. In addition, two CRP grassed waterways will be constructed.
Jim and Betsy work tirelessly to control soil erosion on their property. They continue to work closely with the conservation district to assess their property to reduce the erosion of soil that could contaminate the rivers. They understand, when soil is lost it affects crop production and water quality. These are issues that effect everyone in the area, including wildlife.
It is hard to assess how much soil has been saved over the years through these conservation practices, but we are sure it is several tons of soil per year. It is easy to see the immediate results once these structures have been installed. Jim and Betsy, believe that successful farming practices and improving water quality go hand-in-hand, resulting in a benefit to everyone.
Supervisor, Allen Marble comments; "We're proud of Jim Heins and Elizabeth Van der Hagen for what they've done in conserving our natural resources in our area. It's great to be able to recognize the work they've done locally. They've provided a wonderful example for us by installing erosion control practices on land they own and operate. They are especially concerned with the condition of our area rivers. Knowing each practice they implement on their property not only impacts their property, but also downstream in the area watershed. Maintaining a large farming operation requires a lot of time and the amount of attention they direct to making sure their operation as "River Friendly"
is commendable." said Jerad Bach District Manager.
