After ten successful years of sponsoring an Environmental Day Camp in Blue Earth County, we had the privilege of participating at the Faribault Counties Environmental Day Camp for 5th graders. The event brings together approximately 200 students to explore the outdoors by involving them in a, "hands-on" learning experience.

Erin Degerstedt, our Maple River Watershed Technician, assisted by Mary Purrier, the SWCD Assistant Manager, presented a learning station called Water Olympics. Water Olympics are a number of activities that give the students a chance to compete in the investigating of two properties of water, adhesion and cohesion. Students see signs of water's adhesion properties daily (eg: water beading on the surface of a glass). However, they may not appreciate how unique this quality is. Learning how water striders skate over the surface of water or how water travels upward through soil gives students opportunities to explore further the structure and behavior of the water molecule. |

The students "hands on" activities included; how many drops of water can you get on a penny, how many paperclips can you float on the surface of water, how many pennies can you drop in a glass before the water spills out, and a boat race using a drop of soap on a hand cut cardboard boat.
